Detroit is a 3 year old pigtail macaque that was confiscated from the previous owner due to the complaint of a monkey bite. He arrived in 2001. The owner was attempting to sell Detroit and the arrogant, uneducated person tried to grab the monkey. All in all, it was a smart move on the monkey's part, he was brought here to sanctuary after spending time in the Humane Society lockup for several months. Trying to get the monkey here was a problem. The planes came up with an embargo against primate flights, the weather was too hot to fly even if the Air cargo would have accepted him. After 10 weeks, our Board of Directors member Frank Lucas volunteered to drive to Michigan and get him. Every one should have members as dedicated as ours is fortunate to have! Along with Detroit came the owner's list of the little guys favorite foods .. pizza, macaroni and cheese, chicken, hot dogs, cooked potatoes, bread and last but not least - fruits and vegetables. This diet, of course, had Detroit down to skin and bones when he arrived. Getting him to eat properly has been a chore, and its still not easy as his stomach gets upset, wonder why? Detroit is known by his alias - Slick. I nicknamed him this as he is slick at stealing his cage mate's food if he gobbles his and is looking for more. Its usually not the biscuits, but the fruit he is after. Detroit now lives with Mercury. They enjoy each other and are two very happy and lucky primates to end up in good hands, out of the pet trade. We are happy to report that Detroit has gained weight since he's been here. |
