Gabby, a pet adult patas monkey, had originally been sold to his owners as a baby capuchin. He soon outgrew their expectations and they could no longer adequately care for him. Gabby arrived in 1999. His owners, caring people who only want the best for him, drove him all the way themselves to help him settle into his new home. Linda tells the story of his first impression of the sanctuary: "He is sitting outside with rain around him for his first experience. He is very interested in the other monkeys, naturally. He is off his feed, but I am going to fill his bowls with carrots, sweet potatoes and fruit of different types and let him get hungry enough to eat a proper diet. He is receiving Boost, a dietary supplement which the owners have kept him on when he doesn't eat enough. This will sustain him. I hope he will eat more as he adjusts to new surroundings. He is actually not very nervous in spite of his ordeal. A 13 hour drive, new surroundings." Gabby is now being housed in a spacious enclosure with George, another male patas monkey. Patas monkeys need A LOT of room! The dimensions are between 30-40 ft. in length and 15ft in height. This will give him lots of running space. The enclosure is being donated through a grant from a private foundation. I will give an update next month. I hope to also have a companion for him in the near future. We are hoping to hold off until his new enclosure is up before this occurrence because of the lack of space in his temporary caging. It is adequate for one, but not two. Its 10'x10'x10' with a building attached for him to go into. The building is 8'x12' There will be a newsletter published in about two weeks with photos, etc., of him and the pig tail, Mercury. |
