Neeko. a pigtail macaque arrived in August 2000 when he was seven years old. He was never allowed to go outside because his owners lived in an apartment. Neeko has spent his entire life confined to a dog carrier, forced to wear diapers and drank baby formula from a bottle. The diapers wore all his hair off, and caused a severe rash. I can only imagine the itch that was constant, and could never be scratched. Anemic from being on a semi liquid diet, Neeko did not know how to eat solid foods. Neeko was purchased in Missouri, and sold as the world's smallest primate. The new owners were told the monkey was fully grown, and would stay the size he was. At the time of sale his actual age was 2-3 weeks. Neeko is severely mentally challenged, and although I have gotten him to eat, it is doubtful he will ever be able to be put with another primate due to his incapabilities. I have rescued other monkeys who were mentally stressed from human contact and have been able to be placed along other primates for company, but sadly, Neeko is not showing signs of this happening. I hope for better days ahead for Neeko and possibly one day he will be able to be partnered with a female of his species. |
