I was informed by my friend and fellow primate rescuer, Gwenna Blackmore, that a monkey was abandoned in a small wire cage outside the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. I contacted Captain Brown on Monday, June 28th 2004 and even though the shelter was closed he allowed me to bring some fruit and see the monkey. I was saddened to see a very scared but very sweet Java Macaque had just been dumped like unwanted trash. He was being cared for at the shelter by a wonderful lady named Karina Fitzpatrick. It was obvious to me that he had an infection from his teeth being cut or filed and needed to get help as quickly as possible. His tail was bald from sitting in urine and he has a curvature of the spine. I spoke to Linda at Mindy's Memory but I was hesitant to burden her with another monkey. I tried to find placement elsewhere but to no avail. On Tuesday I brought some toys to the shelter and met Lt. Castillo, another caring person who was willing to help this little monkey. On Wednesday, Linda Barcklay called and said she would take him and after scrambling to get a proper shipping crate along with generous donation from Gwenna Blackmore to help with the costs, I made arrangements to fly him out on Thursday night. He arrived on Friday July 2nd. Linda Barcklay called and told me that the first thing he did was run to Beasley ( a bonnet macaque) in the enclosure next door and kiss and hug him through the cage. He spent his first day sitting in the sun with his eyes closed. He now lives with Holly and Baby Cecil. He was a lucky monkey to have been cared for by the wonderful staff at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. That is why we named him Westley. He will now be cared for forever by Mindy's Memory and his new savior, Linda Barcklay. Please help Westley and the other monkeys by sponsoring him or making a donation today. |
